About Pattaya City

Fifty years ago, Pattaya was a somnolent fishing village accessible only by boat from Bangkok or other towns near the estuary of the Chao Phraya. The town’s chief claim to fame was that it served as a resting place for King Narai during his military campaign to oust Burmese forces from his country.

In 1959 a group of American GIs from a U.S. military base in Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat) arrived in Pattaya, renting houses in the southern part of town. On their return to Khorat, they spread the word about the white sands and clear waters of Pattaya beach. The visit jump-started Pattaya’s tourism drive. More U.S. servicemen from military bases scattered throughout Northeast Thailand used the Pattaya town as a rest and recreation tourist spot during the Vietnam War. Hotels were built along the Pattaya shoreline, together with restaurants, nightclubs, and bars in Pattaya city. By the 1980s Pattaya has become one of Thailand’s most popular tourist attractions.

For excellent views over Pattaya, head up Pattaya Hill Road, at the southern end of town, to Wat Pra Yai, with its Big Buddha status.
Off Pattaya Hill Road, not far from Wat Pra Yai, at the northern Jomtien beachfront on Thapphraya Road, is Pattaya Water Park (in Jomtien Beach). With its water slides and whirlpools, this is a place the entire family will enjoy. Next door is Pattaya Park Tower, which features a revolving restaurant on the 53rd floor. After a buffet lunch, you can ride the elevator down to the ground or bungee jump out of the window and descend to earth on the seemingly perilous “sky shuttle”.
